Con Brio

The smell of the briny ocean fills my lungs as I drive along Newport Boulevard on my way to the world famous Wayfarer in Costa Mesa. I’m checking out an emerging band called Con Brio; whose unique and energetic sound is generating a lot of excitement among experimental funk enthusiasts.

Blue and Purple lights dive into my neat double pour of Jameson whiskey. I bob and weave through the crowd to my table on the patio where I stand and talk with Brenden Liu and Marcus Stephens who make up the skilled horn section of Con Brio.

The name Con Brio comes from an Italian phrase used in classical music direction that means “with vigor and energy”. In their thirteen years of existence the band has held fast to their roots despite going through a few transformations (some likely due to the pandemic). They have matured into a kinetic powerhouse led by the sultry and emotive lead vocals of Sarah Clarke. Benjamin Andrews is on guitar, Jonathan Kircher on bass, AJ McKinley on keyboards and back up vocals, and Andrew Laubacher on drums.

Their set at the Wayfarer contained almost entirely new material from their newly released album “Seasons”. I found myself dancing even while trying to record a video of the show. The music is really contagious. They played a full set including premieres of the songs; Seasons, Rarely Seen, Hot on The Dance Floor, and Candlelight Lover. Like me, the crowd didn’t want the show to end!
